Looking for a unique and unforgettable party experience in Albania? Look no further than the Hemingway Bar Tirana Swing Marathon, an epic event that happens only once a year combines music, dancing, and a nostalgic train journey through the Albanian countryside.
The Journey Begins: Tirana to Shkoder by Party Train
The adventure kicked off at Tirana's New Boulevard, where attendees gathered for photos with a decommissioned train, setting the nostalgic mood. After boarding a comfortable bus, the party vibes ramped up with music to get everyone ready for the main event – the Swing Marathon train.
Unfortunately, unforeseen traffic delays pushed back the start time. However, this didn't dampen the spirits! Once aboard the train, the real party began. The atmosphere was electric, with every train car transformed into a mini-festival.
Party on Rails: Food, Drinks, and Entertainment
Every other car offered something different:
Food and Drink Stands: Whether you needed a snack, refreshing beverages, or celebratory cigars, there was a stand to satisfy your cravings.
Live Music: A dedicated train car housed the main DJ and band, pumping out infectious tunes that echoed throughout the entire train.
Social Hub: The sheer number of attendees created a vibrant and friendly atmosphere, perfect for connecting with fellow partygoers.
A Midpoint Celebration: Food, Music, and Local Flavor
The train made a stop approximately an hour from Shkoder, where we were treated to a delightful surprise – a bustling marketplace filled with local vendors. This was a fantastic opportunity to sample Albanian delicacies (including my delicious discovery, blackberry liqueur!), soak in the local culture, and enjoy the live music performance in the open field.
Back on Track: Rooftop Revelry and Marching Band
Refueled and re-energized, we boarded the train once more, the party spirit unwavering. The train's roof transformed into a photo opt for the end of the train ride. The arrival itself was a spectacle, with a marching band leading the way to the street party.
The Grand Finale: Concert, Burlesque, and Dancing
By the time we reached Shkoder, hunger pangs had taken over. Skipping the street party, we opted to grab dinner with newfound friends forged during the train ride. Our culinary adventure concluded, we hustled to the concert hall for the main event – a jazz concert followed by a short burlesque show and an epic dance party that lasted until the wee hours of the morning.
Lessons Learned: Accommodation Matters!
While exhaustion ultimately led us to take the bus back to Tirana that night (arriving home around 3 am!), many attendees opted for accommodations in Shkoder. In hindsight, securing a room in Shkoder would have allowed us to fully experience the city and avoid the late-night commute.
A Truly Unique Albanian Experience
The Hemingway Bar Tirana Swing Marathon is a must-do for anyone seeking an unforgettable and vibrant celebration in Albania. The combination of music, dancing, a scenic train journey, and local flavors is truly one-of-a-kind.
